A comprehensive guide to Shanghai's most magnificent Gothic cathedral.
Xujiahui Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of St. Ignatius, is Shanghai's largest and most impressive Catholic church. Completed in 1910, this architectural marvel showcases classic Gothic style with a brick-and-wood structure and red brick exterior. Its twin bell towers soar approximately 56.6 meters high, each crowned with a golden cross that reaches toward the sky, making it one of Shanghai's most iconic landmarks.
The cathedral's interior features a Latin cross layout with a soaring nave that creates an atmosphere of grandeur and serenity. Most striking are the 64 exquisite clustered columns carved from Jinshan stone, supporting the impressive vaulted ceiling. Massive stained glass windows filter sunlight into brilliant hues, depicting biblical stories that illuminate the sacred space.
Located in Xujiahui, a historic district that was once the center of Catholic missionary activity in Shanghai, the cathedral continues to serve as an active place of worship. Its artistic details are equally remarkable—intricate altars, pulpits, and sculptures adorn the interior, with the main altar crafted from Italian marble, showcasing exceptional artistic value.
Start your visit at Xujiahui Cathedral, admiring its stunning Gothic architecture and twin spires. Take time to explore the interior, including the beautiful stained glass windows and grand altar.
After the cathedral, explore the surrounding Xujiahui Heritage Area, which includes the historic Xujiahui Observatory and the former St. John's University campus. Visit the nearby shopping malls for modern retail experiences, and enjoy the blend of historic and contemporary Shanghai.
